Kai was an extraordinary human, so this annual sailboat race comes with some fun twists. In 2025 and 2026, registered boats had an option to raise funds for Trans Northland to earn themselves a more competitive handicap rating, or a “Kai Cup rating” for the race. Duluth Yacht Club has partnered with us to hold this race and serves as the organizing authority. The race is open to any sailboat that can meet the requirements outlined in the race documents.

Following the memorial yacht race, we gather to celebrate the day’s accomplishments. In 2026, we gave each registered boat a Kai Cup burgee and individual crew members of the top three boats took home a commemorative Kai Cup candle, in additional to place flag for their boat.
